i) Eat a balanced diet rich in proteins and minerals like iron, zinc, copper, magnesium, selenium. These minerals improve oxygen intake and nourish the scalp. Increased oxygen intake improves blood circulation which in turn rejuvenates hair follicles and promotes hair growth. Opt for foods rich in Vitamin A, B, C and E because they promote the production of keratin (the primary building block of hair).
Examples of vitamin-rich foods are: milk, cheese, chicken, eggs, whole grains, salmon, spinach, bell peppers, grapefruit, oats and alfalfa. Fish, flax seeds, spinach and olive oil are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and promote hair growth (almost 30% of the hair shaft is made up of omega-3 fatty acids).
Also know that the number of vegans is on the rise and therefore we urge you to replace meat and dairy with plant-based food. But it’s your choice.
ii) Light-massage your scalp with any of the following oils: olive oil, castor oil, coconut oil or almond oil. These oils stimulate blood flow to the scalp, which motivates hair follicles and improves hair health. Massaging with hot oils open up pores and helps in better absorption.
Apply oil onto scalp with fingertips and massage for about 5 minutes. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then shampoo followed by conditioner. Applying a conditioner minimises sun and environmental damage by forming a protective layer around the hair shaft.
iii) Applying a hair mask promotes hair growth. Crack an egg in a bowl and beat it lightly. Add 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt. Apply to damp hair and leave it on for about 20 to 25 minutes and then shampoo and condition as usual.
The Vitamin A and Vitamin E content in the mask helps stimulate sebum (natural oil produced by the scalp) production, which ends up moisturizing hair. Proteins and Omega-3 fatty acids present in the mask rejuvenate roots and maintain hair health.
iv) Apply aloe directly from the plant or from a bottle containing 100% (undiluted) aloe vera juice. Let it stay for about 20 minutes and then wash with a mild shampoo. The proteins present in aloe vera nourish hair follicles and promote growth.
v) Make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day. When you are dehydrated it also shows up on your hair. Dry hair becomes brittle and vulnerable to damage. Try replacing soda and cold drinks with water. Try carrying a bottle of water, it may not be convenient, but it sure helps.
