Benefits of Haldi (Turmeric) for Skin

Haldi is used as a spice in almost every Indian household. A member of the ginger family, turmeric has a high curcumin content and is grown in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Maharashtra, Assam, Kerala, Karnataka, and West Bengal. Turmeric can be eaten fresh but usually, it is dried and grounded in order to be consumed as a spice. Haldi is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine for treating stomach related problems, regulating blood flow, and skin healing purposes. Modern science has also proven turmeric to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties because of the presence of curcumin in it. Turmeric is also very beneficial for treating various skin related problems. So, let’s have a look at how you can make use of various properties of haldi to make your skin more healthier and beautiful.

Treat Oily Skin:

Do you know how your skin produces oil? The sebaceous glands present in your skin produce oils and waxed for preventing your skin from getting dry. However, overactive sebaceous glands can produce excess oil making your skin very much oily. There is no need to spend hefty amounts on expensive beauty products, rather you can treat your oily skin by simply using turmeric.

Mix equal amounts of yogurt, honey, turmeric and make a smooth paste. Meanwhile, clean your skin for any traces of cosmetics. Use warm water so that the pores open up and apply the mask. Leave it for 20 minutes or wait till the mask dries and stiffens. Now clean off the mask with warm water and splash cold water on your face so that the pores close. You can make the mask more effective by adding a few drops of lemon in it.

Treat Sunburn:

On one hand, sunlight is very beneficial for our skin but an excessive exposure can cause some serious damages like premature skin aging, freckling, the appearance of spider veins, etc. The reason sunlight can prove to be so bad for your skin is that it increases the concentration of an enzyme, known as matrix metalloproteinase-2 or MMP-2, in your skin causing degradation of collagen between the middle and the outer layer of the skin.

Turmeric has an ability to reduce or restrain the increase in MMP-2 due to which collagen does not degrade. Also, it has the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, DNA repair, and anti-cancer & chemo repair properties prevent your skin from various skin ailments. Thus being an effective home remedy for sunburns. All you need to do is mix turmeric powder with olive oil and make a thick paste. Apply it evenly on your skin and wait till the mask dries off completely. Using warm water, wash it off and rinse your face with cold water. Before applying the mask, make sure your face is free of any cosmetic traces and use warm water to open up the pores.

Heal Cuts and Wounds:

Cuts and wounds can sometimes be very painful and uncomfortable. Also, it is important to prevent any type of infection resulting from the wound. Mostly, we run for antibiotic creams and liquid washes when we have an option to use natural herbs which do not have any side effects and are much effective than medicines. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and healing properties, thus can be applied to all parts of the body to help the process of healing in case of an injury. Make a thick paste by mixing turmeric powder and water. Make sure your hands are totally clean and apply the paste evenly to the wound. Once done, cover it by using a bandage and leave for 12-24 hours. Repeat the process for three days. Your wound will heal quickly and you will not be spending a dime on medicines.

Unwanted Facial Hair:

Being a woman, when it comes to your looks, there is nothing you can compromise on. Unwanted facial hairs are something no one wants to deal with but unfortunately, you do not have any control over the way your facial hair grows. All you can do is to run towards the parlor and opt for methods like waxing, bleaching, or even shaving. The important thing to consider here is that to prevent the growth of unwanted facial hair, you use products full of chemicals which in turn damage your skin even more.

Why use chemicals on your skin and why spend a lot of money when you can make use of natural remedies? Prepare a thick paste of turmeric and water, and apply it to the area where you have excessive facial hair. Wait till it is dry and then wipe it off using a cloth dipped in warm water. You will get rid of all the excessive hair with no adverse effects on your skin at all. Also, your skin will be healthier and the whole process will cost you nothing. Isn’t it amazing?
